Tower Bell Ringers

d16WHO WE ARE:

We are a group of parishioners who celebrate our love for God and his church through the unique and ancient Anglican tradition of Change Ringing.  St James is one of only fifty churches in North America with bells hung for change ringing.  We are associated with the North American Guild of Change Ringers and are also part of a worldwide fellowship of change ringers.

WHAT WE DO:

We ring in praise and celebration after the Eucharist, for weddings, and for special events.  We also toll the passing of loved ones and ring on muffled bells for somber occasions.  Our bell tower has six bells, ranging in size from approximately 200 to 500 lbs. Each bell is rung by an individual member of the band.

WHEN & WHERE WE MEET:

We currently ring most Sundays after the 10am worship service and occasionally after the 8am service.  Our ringing room is located above the Sacristy in the church tower and is accessible via a short ladder pulled down from the ceiling followed by a few short flights of stairs.

WHAT WILL BE EXPECTED OF ME:

Bell ringing is an art/skill that requires time to learn and develop. Newcomers are given individual lessons in rope handling and basic ringing. This training is available at St. James and can be arranged around your schedule. It usually takes 6 to 12 lessons to become competent enough to ring with the band.

Ringing with the band is like any team sport. Attendance at every practice session is not required, but taking part in practices helps not only the individual ringer, but is beneficial for the entire band.
